Hi all – today, we’re taking a tour of Alabama. Here’s the downlow on everything you need to know related to becoming a CNA.
CNA Certification Requirements in Alabama
In order to work at any facility as a CNA, an Alabama state approved certification needs to be obtained. In the state of Alabama, at least 120 hours of clinical and lecture training is required. Prior to the exam a student must complete 40 hours of clinical/hands-on work. Once that is completed there is a state exam that tests the individual’s ability to take care of the patient. When the individual becomes a Certified Nursing Assistant, they are placed on the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry. The individual must be an active CNA to be on that registry in order to get hired.
Become a CNA in Alabama
Here are the steps to follow in order to become an Alabama certified CNA:
Enroll in a state certified school
Complete the training
Take practice CNA exam(this step is optional and may be included within certain CNA courses)
Register to take the state CNA exam
Once you pass the exam, apply for desired jobs!

In order to attend CNA training in the state of Alabama, the individual needs to be able to understand, read and speak English, and have at least eight years of education. Programs require for the individual to be at least 16 years old, able to pass a background check, have a medical exam, and have proof of immunization. An individual can work as a CNA while enrolled in a training program or waiting for the state exam for up to four months. CNA training program costs can at an average be $800(tuition only). If you are a current RN, LPN or have a CNA certification within a different state you are able to simply take the CNA exam without training.

Alabama CNA Testing
CNA testing in the state of Alabama includes a written test which covers all of the responsibilities of a CNA, along with his/her skills and different abilities.The Alabama state exam is a two part exam that includes a written or oral portion along with a skills assessment. The oral examination is available for those who have trouble understanding English. Click here to download the exam application.
An individual is able to take the exam up to three times without passing in a 24 month period. It is required that an exam be taken in the English language. On behalf of the Alabama Department of Health, Pearson Vue is responsible for all the testing services.
The exam results will be mailed to the student 5-7 days following the exam.The exam results are simply sent out to inform the individual of their test result and cannot be used for employment purposes. Information for employers will be available to students through the Alabama Nursing Assistant Registry. Results will not be made available via phone, fax or email.
